What to Expect on a Fly Fishing Trip with Riverstone Outfitters

If you're thinking about booking a guided fly fishing trip in Montana, you might be wondering what the day will look like — especially if it’s your first time. At Riverstone Outfitters, we keep it simple: good people, great fishing, and a day you’ll never forget.
Here’s what you can expect when you hit the water with us near Kalispell.

Getting Ready for Your Trip

Booking a trip with Riverstone Outfitters is easy and flexible. Once you reserve your spot, we'll connect with you directly to finalize details like trip timing, meeting location, and any special preferences you have.

We provide everything you need for a great day on the water:

  • High-quality fly rods, reels, and flies
  • Comfortable, professional boats
  • Life jackets and safety equipment
  • Waters, non-alcoholic beverages, & snacks. (Full day trips will include lunch as well)

What you should bring:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing (layers are key)
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Hat, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure!
  • Any additional snacks or drinks, theres always extra room in the cooler!

Meeting Your Guide

On the day of your trip, you'll meet your guide at a predetermined spot — often a convenient boat ramp or public access near the river you're fishing. Our guides are friendly, experienced locals who know these waters like the back of their hands.

We’ll spend a few minutes going over the plan for the day, answering any last-minute questions, and getting everyone geared up. Then it’s time to hit the water.

On the Water

Depending on your trip, you might be floating a stretch of the Flathead River, casting dries on the Clark Fork, drifting down the legendary Blackfoot, or exploring the expansive waters of Flathead Lake.

During the trip:

  • We’ll target wild trout on the rivers and lake trout or other species on Flathead Lake.
  • Beginners will get relaxed, hands-on instruction.
  • Experienced anglers can hone techniques like dry fly presentations, reading water, or targeting rising fish.

Our goal is to create a day that matches your style — whether that means intense fishing, learning new skills, soaking up the scenery, or a little of everything.

Experience Level — Everyone's Welcome

You don't need to be a seasoned fly fisher to have an incredible day with us.

We regularly guide:

  • Total beginners who’ve never held a fly rod before
  • Families and kids
  • Intermediate anglers looking to sharpen skills
  • Experienced fishers chasing technical challenges

Whatever your background, we’ll tailor the trip to fit you.

Our Goal — Make It the Best Day of Your Trip

At Riverstone Outfitters, we believe a great day on the water is about more than just catching fish (though we'll do plenty of that too!). It’s about laughter, learning, adventure, and soaking up everything Montana has to offer.
We’re committed to making your trip the absolute highlight of your vacation.
